We are building a new branch library. As this
project gets underway, we'll keep you up to date on our progress here.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Where will the branch be built?
A. On Highway 212 right next to the Oak Hill Fire
Station, near Oak Hill Elementary School.
Q. Why was the branch located there?
A. The western part of Newton County is the most densely
populated area outside of Covington/Oxford. The Library Board
determined that this was the best area to build the next branch library
to serve the most people. The Newton County Board of Commissioners
donated the land to the Library System for the branch.
Q. What is the street address?
A. 6190 Highway 212, Covington, GA 30016
Q. Why is the branch called Porter Memorial
Branch Library?
A. The Library Board named the branch in honor of James Hyde
Porter, of Porterdale fame, in appreciation of the continual major
donations made to the Library System by the Porter Foundation over the
last 40 years.
Q. When will the branch open to the public?
A. Summer of 2010.
Q. What will be the branch hours of operation?
A. The hours have not be set by the Library Board. They
are considering proposals of being open close to the same hours as the
Covington Branch. The branch may be open on Monday and Wednesday
evenings rather than Tuesday and Thursday evenings.
Q. How large is the branch library?
A. 18,000 square feet -- a little over half the size of the
Covington Branch.
Q. What will the branch feature?
A. Adult books, children's books, magazines, DVD's, audio
books, a Children's Room, a Reference Area, a Teen Room, a Quiet Reading
Room, Study Rooms and a Meeting Room and computers.
Q. When will you be hiring more staff?
A. Spring of 2010.
