3. How do I find a title in the online catalog?
Click here for our
online catalog

Login with your user ID and PIN
number.
You do not have to log in but, if you do your searches will show
your home library's books first. On the search page if you change the "This
Branch" to Newton County Library you get the same results
as if you logged in.
Type in the title and change the box that says "keyword" to "title";
Or you can go to the "Advanced Search" and search and use the Quick Search for a display of all titles on the reading list. Under Quick Search change the dropdown list to "call number". Type in 'middle school reading list' for the call number, or use 'high school reading list' for the call number depending on your reading list level.
Results of the "call number" search will be a list of all the titles on the reading list that the library owns.
Choose the title you want to read by clicking on the title.
Scroll down the screen and look
for a heading "View Copy
Information for all libraries".
Read this small chart to find out if the title is
available in our library building.
If it is available, you find where it is in the library by looking at the area on the screen under the same "View copy Information for all Libraries" heading labeled "Callnumber" and go to that area in the library to find your title. Ask the staff if you don't know where to look.
4. If the library doesn't have the book what can I do?
If the title is not available you can place a "hold" on it. A "hold" means that when the first available copy of the books gets turned in, we will save it for you. We will either email you or call you and let you know the book is waiting for you. You will have 5 days to pick it up before we return it to the shelf for someone else to use. We can not tell you how long it will take to get the book - we don't know when one will be returned.
5. How do I place a hold on a book?
To place the hold look in the upper right corner area of the screen displaying your title for a link "Place Hold"
Click on the Place Hold link. Now you will have to enter your library card number or your username and your PIN number or password.
The username is your 14 digit library card number.
The password is your
pin number.
If you do not know
your pin number you MUST present yourself with your library card at a
PINES library to get a pin number. Pin numbers will not be given out
over the telephone, fax machine or e-mail.
The first time you login to the new PINES Catalog you will be forced to change your PIN number to a secure password. Once you login you have the ability to change your username, your password, and contact information for placing holds, so we know how to notify you that your hold items are available for pickup.
After you confirm your information click on the "Place Hold" button. The message you receive will indicate if you were successful in placing the hold. If you were not and don't understand why here are a couple of reasons;
DVD's, Videos, Audiobooks and music are not loaned between library systems - in order for this type of hold to be successful your home library must own the title.
New books, less than six months old, are not loaned between library systems. If you want a new book your home library will have to own it or you will have to go to the library that does own it and check it out.
Please do not hesitate to email (library@newtonlibrary.org), call (770-787-3231) or ask us in person, if you have any questions, issues or problems with placing a hold.
