Library services for children are housed in
Sara’s Room, named in honor of Sara Trammell, Chairman of the Newton County Library Board from 1952 to 1996.

Collections

A variety of items and services are available for the children of Newton County and their parents.  Books are most numerous, with a collection of approximately 35,000.  Videos and DVD’s, Audio books, music CD’s, and magazines for children are also available and may be checked out for use at home.

Parents, Guardians
and Caregivers

Help your child learn the rules of the library and show them the best ways to behave in the library by  supervising your child’s experience while in the building.  Our staff will do all they can to help you and your child enjoy and benefit from the time you spend here, but your child's experience at the library depends upon you.

Young children, under the age of 8, should not be left alone in Sara’s Room.  The library is a public building and the staff cannot be responsible for your child’s behavior or safety.  The staff of Children’s Services respects your exclusive right to make decisions about what your child reads and views.

Children's Reference
Assistance

The staff of Children’s Services provides assistance to children and parents in seeking information for homework and school assignments as well as personal interests.  The collection of materials in Sara’s Room is arranged in a way that can be accessed conveniently for all users.  If you have special needs or are seeking a specific kind of information, please ask staff members for assistance.  Every effort will be made to locate the appropriate materials.

Electronic Resources

The information superhighway is growing and children are not left behind at Newton County Library.  Located in the Reference section of the Children’s department, Children’s Internet terminals are available.  A parent must accompany each child using the Internet in the library.  In addition to this source of information, children may also use computers with a menu of desktop applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Power Point without Internet access and without the direct supervision of a parent or guardian.  Printing is available from all computers for black & white at 15¢ a page and color at 75¢ a page.

Special Storytimes
and Tours

Children’s Services offers special story times and tours for school groups, daycare centers and other organizations.  Please call 770-385-6444 to make arrangements for these programs.
