Reference Collection

The diverse general reference collection includes encyclopedias, dictionaries, directories, atlases, computerized indexes to magazines and newspapers, medical, legal and financial resources, consumer publications, and career guidance materials. 

The periodical collection has more than 150 current magazines and newspapers with electronic access to back issues. 

Information Assistance

Professional librarians assist visitors and telephone callers in locating answers to a variety of questions and in the use of the library, its collections and reference resources.

GALILEO stands for GeorgiA LIbrary LEarning Online, an initiative of the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia.  A World Wide Web-based virtual library, GALILEO provides access to multiple information resources that encompass over 100 databases indexing thousands of periodicals, scholarly journals and newspapers.  Over 2000 journal titles are provided in full-text.  Other resources include encyclopedias, business directories and government publications. Through collaboration and resource sharing, GALILEO seeks to provide equal access to information for all Georgia citizens.

GALILEO Access From Outside the Library

GALILEO is available in the library as well as from home, work or school.  Some of GALILEO's databases are accessible to all and you can use this link to connect to those databases. -  www.galileo.usg.edu

Many of GALILEO's databases require a password. When a password is required you can use your PINES account to access GALILEO.  Please follow these steps to use your PINES account to access GALILEO:

  1. Go to the PINES catalog - use this link: http://gapines.org.

  2. Click on “My Account.”

  3. Enter your library card number and password.
    (If you do not have or know your password contact your local library before proceeding.  Your PINES password will only be given to you and you must present yourself at the library with your library card to get your password.)

  4. Once logged in to your PINES account, click on "GALILEO" at the bottom of the screen and you will be authenticated and transferred to the GALILEO web site so that you can begin using GALILEO's resources.

Heritage Room

Collections:  Located in the Heritage room are various sources of historical and genealogical information that concentrate on Georgia and especially on Newton County and the surrounding areas.  The materials include census records and Soundex, Revolutionary War and Confederate veterans rosters, local newspapers back to 1868, the Georgia Death Index, county histories and the Official Records of the Confederate and Union Armies.  Although Heritage Room items cannot be checked out of the library, a photocopy machine is nearby at 10˘ per page. 

Also available are specifically designed computer menus provide the library user access to a variety of databases and web sites that include information from various genealogy and historical resources.  Printouts of items from the Heritage Room computers are available for 15˘ a page.

Volunteer Services:  Volunteers assist users of the Heritage Room several days each week.  They provide instruction in using the microfilm and microfiche readers, genealogy computers, and the variety of books in the room.  Although our volunteers cannot do extensive research for you, they are happy to get you started in discovering your own family tree.

Currently volunteers staff the Heritage Room on Monday and Wednesday afternoons and Monday and Thursday mornings.  To confirm the schedule please call the library at 770-385-6449 or send an e-mail request to library@newtonlibrary.org
