Board of Trustees

The Newton County Library Board of Trustees is an eight-member body that governs the Newton County Library.  The Board of Trustees sets policy for the Library, plans future service initiatives, and supervises the Library Director in the administration of the Library system.  The land, buildings, equipment and materials of the Library are under the governmental authority of the Library Board of Trustees.

The members of the Board are appointed from each governmental agency financially supporting the Library on a regular basis.  The Newton County Board of Commissioners appoints five of the members.  Each of these members is appointed to a three year term that can be renewed twice.  The three remaining members serve as direct representatives of the Chairman of the Newton County Board of Commissioners, the Mayor of the City of Covington, and the Newton County Superintendent of Schools.  These members serve at the pleasure of their respective appointing official.  The officials can choose to sit on the Board themselves in lieu of appointing a representative.

Friends Are. . . people who know that a community with a first rate library is a better place in which to live.  Friends bring together involved, caring people who are willing to work to make our library even more effective in our community.

The Library Needs Friends Because. . . it is one of the main centers of culture and information in Newton County.  Although our library is tax-supported, there are items that are not included in the library's budget.  Friends of the library can provide financial assistance.  Newton County is a new library system.  Many services have been added and book deposits have been created in outlying areas of the county.  Your ideas and your voice are needed to support and promote one of our county's greatest assets.

Friends Help In Many Ways. . . Friends of the library sponsor cultural activities in many areas of the arts and literature as a means of broadening community awareness and increasing use of library services.

Friends raise funds for their activities through membership dues, special programs, gifts, endowments, and memorials for the library.

A large variety of equipment has been purchased and many stimulating programs provided by Friends of the Library.  The children's Vacation Reading programs have been enriched by donations from the Friends, and countless volunteer hours have benefited the library.

Our Volunteers

The Library utilizes volunteers to enhance public service to the community.  Volunteers generally provide support services to staff and/or work on special projects.

Volunteers are selected on the basis of their qualifications and interests, and upon the needs of the library for the duration of the volunteer work periods, which run from January through May, June through August, and September through December.

Volunteers will work with and be trained by a specific supervisor.  Volunteers are expected to take directions from the supervisor who is responsible for their work.  Work schedules and time commitments will be arranged by each volunteer and his or her supervisor.

Volunteers are incredibly important to us.  Volunteers are recognized each year for their service.  Any Volunteers who donate in excess of 50 hours per volunteer work period will have any Library fines waived and receive other library benefits.

To be a volunteer stop by or call 770-787-3231 for more information.
