Porter Memorial Branch Library Info Sheet

Q. Where will the branch be built?
A. On Highway 212 right next to the Oak Hill Fire Station, near Oak Hill Elementary School.

Q. Why was the branch located there?
A. The western part of Newton County is the most densely populated area outside Covington/Oxford. The Library Board determined that this was the best area to build the next branch library to serve the most people. The Newton County Board of Commissioners donated the land to the Library System for the branch.

Q. What is the street address?
A. 6190 Highway 212; Covington, GA 30016

Q. Why is the branch called the Porter Memorial Branch Library?
A. The Library Board named the branch in honor of James Hyde Porter, of Porterdale fame, in appreciation of the continual major donations made to the Library System by the Porter Foundation over the last 40 years.

Q. When will the branch open to the public?
A. January 2011

Q. What will be the branch hours of operation?
A. The hours have not been set by the Library Board. They are considering proposals of being open close to the same hours as the Covington Branch. The branch may be open on Monday and Wednesday evenings rather than Tuesday and Thursday evening.

Q. How large is the branch library?
A. 19,000 square feet -- a little over half the size of the Covington Branch.

Q. What will the branch feature?
A. Adult books, children’s books, magazines, DVD’s, books on tape, a Children’s
Room, a Reference Area, a Teen Room, A Quiet Reading Room, Study Rooms a Meeting Room and Internet computers.

Q. When will you be hiring more staff?
A. Fall of 2010
